Aims and Mission

The National Council of Tertiary Music Schools (NACTMUS) was founded in 1993 as the National Council of Heads of Tertiary Music Schools. It is a non-profit association of Music Schools or Colleges or Conservatoria or Faculties/Departments which offer specialist music degrees for the education and training of professional musicians. Membership is available to eligible institutions or their nominees in all States and Territories in Australia and overseas.

 

 

Mission:

NACTMUS is committed to the achievement of excellence and diversity across the music sub-disciplines including:

  • Research and Scholarship
  • Performance
  • Composition
  • Technology
  • Musicology / Ethnomusicology
  • Pedogogy
  • Therapy
 

 

Aims:

  • To provide a national forum for the discussion of issues and concerns relevant to music in higher education.
  • To promote music as a specialist discipline within a tertiary context.
  • To develop a national unity and strength to enhance the status of music in universities, colleges and schools of music.
  • To foster all aspects of the education and training of professional musicians through: performanc- based research, composition; and music scholarship
  • To enhance the awareness of and commitment to the work of Australian musicians.
  • To promote quality and diversity in the delivery of music courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • To maximise opportunities for all music students to develop and enhance individual potential.
  • To establish a national context for the continuing professional development of the musician.
  • To represent the views of NACTMUS at institutional, state and federal and, where appropriate, international levels.
  • To act as an advisory council to relevant institutions, state and federal governments and other instrumentalities as required.
  • To develop international collegial and institutional links.
  • To facilitate staff, student and visiting guest artist exchanges.
  • To contribute actively to the development and enhancement of pre-tertiary curricula.
  • To develop a relationship of synergy with the music industry.
  • To develop such strategies as are appropriate to meet the aims of the Council in a timely, efficient and effective way.

NACTMUS does not at this time offer accreditation of courses or institutions.
