Meeting Format

NACTMUS holds two general meetings per year, in mid February and late August.  The venue rotates between Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.  On the day prior, an Executive meeting is followed by a dinner in a local restaurant to which all available members are welcome to attend.  The full day meeting commences with morning tea from 9.30am, with formal sessions from 10am to approximately 3.30pm, concluding with drinks. 

The topics discussed in recent years include:

  • Government policy developments in higher education and the arts, particularly as it impacts on tertiary institutions, for example Research, School music education, Post-school funding of music training outside the tertiary sector.
  • National developments in the arts and the music industry, and how these interface with the work of tertiary institutions.
  • Challenges for the Australian tertiary music sector, including resourcing and fundraising, learning and teaching, and recruitment and retention of students staff and leaders.
  • Showcasing of members’ innovation in approaches to research and learning & teaching.

Guest keynote speakers are regularly invited to attend meetings and make presentations on key topics, such as the following persons who have contributed to NACTMUS in this way in recent years (their position at the time is also indicated):

  • Professor Malcolm Gillies, Chair of the Council of Humanities Arts and Social Sciences
  • Toss Gascoigne, CEO of CHASS
  • Professor Warren Bebbington, Ormond Professor, University of Melbourne
  • Claire Donovan, Chair of Research Quality Framework Technical Working Group on Research Impact
  • Dame Janet Ritterman, former Principal of the Royal College of Music, UK
